registry etiquette?

FI and I registered over the weekend.  It was exhausting.  We were in Macy's and then BBB for a total of 6 hours and we never even made it over to bathroom and bedroom linens!  I know that both stores carry a lot of the same items, what is the thought on putting the same items on both registries? 

The way I looked at it, is if I monitor my registry every few days if I see that someone bought our keurig from BBB I can remove it from the macy's registry, rather than only having it on BBB or macy's and a person buying it from the other store because a better sale was available and me not knowing and potentially ending up with a repeat purchase.  I was only planning to do this with the bigger ticket items (keuring, kitchenaid mixer, pots and pans set, etc), not the smaller stuff like kitchen gadgets.  just wanted to see what was commonly done by others.  Thanks!

Don't register for duplicates. People know Macy's and BBB sell the same stuff, if they want to comparison shop, they will. Also, don't stalk your registry. It is more fun to be surprised when you open your gifts.

It sounds like a lot of work. I would just register for one of everything. Most people who care about saving money will do the research and get it marked off.

And honestly, I'd probably roll my eyes if I saw two full sets of big ticket items on your registry since I'd look at both before making a purchase.

Ok thank you.  We didn't register for duplicates but the BBB person wanted to add ones we put on our macy's registry to the BBB one.  We declined, but then I started second guessing.

Ditto.  I see nothing wrong with having sheets, towels, etc. on both registries.  But there is no way I would put the same or similar big ticket items on both registries.

I am also a registry stalker, too (and a room block stalker). Basically, stalking's just a way of life for me now.

For the most part, you shouldn't double register because your guests can look at the two registries themselves. I also feel that for a guest that purchases a big ticket item like a pots and pans set, it would kind of cheapen the experience for them if you opened another pots and pans set 5 minutes later. Maybe I'm a jerk, but if I spent $600 on a gift, I want to be THE person that bought you your pots and pans set that you'll use every day, not just one person that bought one of your pots and pans sets. Guests want to feel like they are buying something you really need, not something you are going to return.

I have to admit I did double register for some smaller items that I really, really wanted and wouldn't mind having two of. For example, I just added two different stir fry pans and some blender bottles to 2 of my registries yesterday.

Yes, I ACTUALLY want more than one blender bottle and stir fry pan. I just got into making protein shakes and I have one blender bottle that I'm constantly cleaning. I'd ideally like to have 3 of them. Also, I don't have a stir fry pan and would like to have 2 in slightly different sizes.

ETA: a blender bottle is this small one serving shaker thing (not actually a blender) that costs about $8.

I'm the opposite - I actually don't mind seeing 2 or 3 big ticket items on multiple registries, because I know most people don't look at all of them, and you're increasing exposure by having them duplicated.  I read it as a signal that the couple really really wants that item.

That said, I didn't do it for a different reason... we put all our big ticket items at Macy's in the hopes that if people bought them there we'd get the 5% rewards back.  We did fill our Macy's registry out with lower-priced items too, but almost everything that's expensive is there. So our china, vacuum, bedding, etc. is all there.  So far it's worked - we've gotten a lot of china, our bedding, etc., and it's all been bought at Macy's.  People haven't comparison-shopped on their own so far. In fact, that registry is almost completely wiped out.

And while I agree with 99.9% of what LIatris says, I'm all about registry-stalking  And yes, I even stalk the thank you note manager... my justification is that it lets me get thank you notes written earlier!

OMG I am very guilty of registry stalking AND the thank you card manager. Why doesn't BBB have one? (or do they? I can't find it if it does!) but both my Macys and Pottery Barn ones have it. So fun, lol.

Hoffse I started second guessing not doing duplicates for that reason. My other thought is "if the stand mixer is at Macy's but a guest buys it at BBB and its not on that registry I could still end up with 2 because i wouldn't know it got bought at BBB and it would still show up at Macy's.". At any rate, I'm going to leave as is and if I end up having to do returns, so be it.
